About the Image(s)

This image was made November 11th 2022 in an old quarry a few miles from home.
There are many such twisted old elders in this place although some were destroyed in a storm prior to this visit.

I have some pre storm images on mono negative made in 2014 so I may well have a look at those.

Sony A900 ISO200 Minolta 28-105mm zoom at 60mm 1/60 f5.6 tripod.

Processed in Affinity Photo 2.

Clarity added at development stage.
Exposure adjusted via Levels.
Converted to mono in SEP using the High Structure Smooth preset.
Lightened

Hi John
Your eye for shape and pattern has worked again you spotted this among the frenzy of the undergrowth,I was wondering if a little extra contrast would make it pop a little more so I added some and made a slight curves adjustment see what you think.   Posted: 05/10/2023 14:25:23

Order from chaos was the at least of the intent.
I reckon the chaos is still there as a backdrop and is making it difficult to arrive at a good result.
I have today had a play with CEP and SEP to no avail!
It will be interesting to read what the others have to say...   Posted: 05/11/2023 08:17:14

John -I like the flow of the trunks from lower left to upper right with the added interest of the opposing curved trunk in the middle.
CEP Pro Contrast has no beneficial effect, but a Curves layer as used by Ian is the way to go and I would be tempted to go a little further - positioning the sample point on the lighter portion of the trunk lower right and drawing it down - if Affinity offers this mode.

Peter, thanks for the comments.
I am beginning to think that there is just too much detail in this image. Would that the tree was in a better location!   Posted: 05/17/2023 07:31:25

Hi John: A busy image with a nice leading line coming in from the left. Nice textures as well. I agree with the previous comments.   Posted: 05/13/2023 08:02:08

John....you sure did challenge us this month!!! I took your image and using layers I selectively toned down everything except the trunks of the tree. I then took into CEP and added contrast, detail extractor, intensity & curves. While I am not suggesting it is any good, it was fun to try.   Posted: 05/18/2023 13:14:18

Nick, that version is taking the image in the right direction..   Posted: 05/19/2023 00:36:11

Being late to the party, I would have to say I like the edits done by Nick. I find the original image leaves me with trying to figure out the focus of the image. My eye goes to the area of the branch on the left (C shaped with he little extension on it) but getting there I am disappointed with what I see. With the background contrasted I see the flow of the branches with the distracting background. Susan   Posted: 05/23/2023 16:24:10

Hello John. Your eye caught an interesting form and texture. I like Nick's edit as a way of isolating the subject. A challenging image in an unfortunate position.   Posted: 05/24/2023 13:01:40
