January 2022 - Last Light

About the Image(s)

This is an image that has done well for me as a colour image and due to work commitments I have had little time to find something new the image was taken in April last year at sunset the image shows New Brighton lighthouse which is about 5 minutes walk from my home, not sure how well this works as always the groups opinions would be greatly appreciated.

How I did it

Canon EOS 5D Mk III lens Canon EF24-105mm f 11, ISO 100, 3 minutes exposure 6 stop Lee filter fitted to lens RAW file adjusted in photoshop converted to mono using a gradient map on an adjustment layer, sharpened using a high pass filter.

Hello Ian !
Lovely mellow composition and great capture. I have two suggestions for your consideration. Firstly, I would remove the vignette as I do not think it helps. Second, it maybe your intention but the light on the sand & rocks in the center of the foreground is bright enough that it draws my eye away from the prime subject. A subtle burn on the sand I think might make a difference.   Posted: 01/08/2022 17:06:49

HI Ian: I love light houses and this one is close to the top of my list. Nice leading line which draws me right into the light house. The water is so soft, which is really nice, b/c of your 3 min exposure.   Posted: 01/08/2022 18:47:36

Ian - quite a sombre image, but one which has great atmosphere enhanced by the long shutter speed. I have no issues with the vignette which helps to concentrate the eye on the main subject which is in low light nor with the brightness of the water in the foreground.
Close examination reveals minor halos around the lighthouse:(   Posted: 01/10/2022 06:30:40

Ian,very well done. I as well question the vignette, or perhaps tone it down a little? I suppose it's just personal taste. Your exposure is spot on.   Posted: 01/12/2022 14:52:55
