The Masai Warrior by Paul Roth

June 2021 - The Masai Warrior

About the Image(s)

The image was taken in Stone Town, during a torrential downpour. In the sheltered area, we came across a Masai warrior. It rained heavily for about an hour, during that time we spoke and got to know each other.

The photo was taken with a Nikon D5, 70-200 mm lens at f2.8, 1/125 sec. 1000iso. It was opened in Lightroom, with basic adjustments made. I then converted the image to B/W Styler 2.0, I did take a number of images of him, this one I particularly like.

Excellent portrait Paul. The texture of the skin and light gradient across the face reveal much about the subject.   Posted: 06/13/2021 17:42:45

Hi Paul: I like your portrait very much..it looks extemporaneous with his rungu... As I look at his portrait, I can't help but wondering what he is thinking .. he looks very contemplative. Good Job!   Posted: 06/13/2021 19:07:58

Paul - another strong portrait with a great pose, well positioned in the frame and atmospheric. DOF is very shallow almost too shallow?- maybe another stop down?   Posted: 06/14/2021 05:21:30

Paul well done. Beautiful skin tones. I assume that item by his face is as Ella called it, his rungu? can you enlighten me?   Posted: 06/15/2021 11:05:20

A rungu is a wooden throwing club or baton bearing special symbolism and significance in certain East African tribal cultures. It is especially associated with Maasai morans who have traditionally used it in warfare and for hunting.   Posted: 06/15/2021 14:24:11

Hi Paul, I am in a process of learning various methods on how to convert Color to BW from a Senior Mentor in PSA. Your color to B/W conversion is indeed flawless to me.

You said that you converted the image to B/W Styler 2.0. What is Styler 2.0.? Do you mind to share your post editing workflow in this case? Thank you.

B/W Styler is a Lightroom/Photoshop plugin. It is available as a stand-alone program. It works very well for B/W conversion. You can download a trial of this software.

I did the post-processing a while ago and don't recall the exact steps. That said, if you download a copy of the PhotoWiz B W Styler you should readily find the toning.
The processing was done in Lightroom, I then used the plugin.
Sorry to be so vague.   Posted: 06/16/2021 13:19:53

Hi Paul
Another beautiful portrait you say you got to know one another this so shows in the image he looks relaxed, you have captured a moment of contemplation so well the toning really adds to the image you have produced some great portraits but this is my favourite.   Posted: 06/16/2021 16:19:30
