Shirahiage Falls by Susan Quinn

March 2025 - Shirahiage Falls

About the Image(s)

This image is of Shirahiage Falls in Hokkaido, Japan. The weather was in the single digits. It was taken with my Sony AR5. I was on a tripod as I needed to lean the trip pod leg over the bridge in order to get a good angle. It is a difficult composition as the waterfall is straight down but the bush to the left is on a flattened area of ground. This image is actually better in color as the water takes on a pale blue/turquoise color and the rest of the image is black and white. The color is not from the sky but rather the aluminum in the water. The tree branches to the bottom left are covered with hoarfrost. I did minimal work on th image but did convert it to B&W using Silver Effects.

Susan: What an interesting image. How brave of you to lean over the bridge for this composition. I suspect your shutter setting was slow looking at the effect on the waterfall. I'd love to see this in color. Great job.   Posted: 03/10/2025 05:45:50

Susan - a well executed image of the waterfall - the streams of water cascading down the rocks are so much more subtle and gentile than a white torrent! The use of a slow shutter speed has enhanced the atmosphere of the image.   Posted: 03/14/2025 06:44:03

Susan, an image which has captured the waterfall and the weather very nicely.
I love the softness in the water,   Posted: 03/15/2025 04:43:32

Hi Susan
the movement of the water has been captured to perfection the waterway not only leads the eye a;; the way through the picture but adds wonderful contrast between the sides of picture a full tonal range of monochrome tones all the way through,no picture however good is worth putting yourself in danger so please be careful in future.   Posted: 03/19/2025 20:18:25
