WWII American Cemetery, Sidi Bu Said, Tunisia 2024 by Ed Ries

October 2024 - WWII American Cemetery, Sidi Bu Said, Tunisia 2024

About the Image(s)

Technical: Canon EOS R5, 24-240mm lens at 90mm; f /13 at 1/1000; ISO 200. Title: American WW ll Cemetary at Sidi Bou Said, Tunisia. Early morning light. Contrast control using Nik CEP4, top was cropped; front shaded area dodged slightly. Image converted in NIK SEF 4. Final image used Topaz DeNoise AI. Sharpened with a high pass filter.

Personal comment. I think most people think about the American cemetery in Normandy, and often forget about the sacrifices made by the Allies in North Africa. The crosses and stars shinning bright in the morning sun, row upon row, was a beautiful but certainly poignant and though provoking sight.

A traditional image with a new twist. I have not viewed an image in the cemetery with the front crosses in the shadows. To me it really enhances the image. Also I appropriated seening a different cemetery that commemorates the work of the allies in North Africa. My uncle was there and as you point out you don't heard much about the war in the area. Ed - a very poignant image wgich reminds us of the sacrifices madw by others on our behalf. The composition is most effective with the straight on row of crosses displaced to the right. The lighting adds to the drama, but I am not sure about the shaded crosses in the foreground - a little too indistinct for my poor eyes.   Posted: 10/12/2024 10:11:35

Hi Ed: Dealing with shadows is a tricky business in composition. Having said that, I think you handled it well. To my eye, looking at the crosses in shadow leads me right into the image.   Posted: 10/12/2024 12:58:11

Hi Ed
I worked in Belgium for a few years and visited many of the war grave cemetries in that country mainly WW.I graves as your picture shows they kept in a superb condition, for me you have handled the foreground shadows wonderfully there is detail throughout and contrasts really well with crosses in sunlight,I think this image is very sensitively composed and is a reminder what we owe to the Allied Forces.   Posted: 10/13/2024 17:00:09

Ed, Like Ian I also worked abroad for a few years, in my case in the Netherlands. I recall passing such sites over there and I was greatly moved. Your image is equally moving.   Posted: 10/14/2024 21:07:13
