Portland Head Lighthouse by Bill Ballard

September 2023 - Portland Head Lighthouse

About the Image(s)

On a recent trip to Maine, we visited many lighthouses including the Portland Head Lighthouse. This image was taken mid-morning with a Lumix G9 Camera and 7 mm wide angle lens. Settings were Iso 400, shutter 1/800 and F11. Shutter setting was to freeze water movement and F11 was to give greater depth of field. The scene I wanted to capture was the lighthouse and the little bay in front. I liked the way the rock formations around the bay point to the lighthouse and the circular shape of the bay bringing my eye back to it. I did not want to crop in on the lighthouse.

Nice view of the lighthouse. The rocks in front of the main subject taking our eyes from it. Try a little be different   Posted: 09/06/2023 13:09:36

The light house is the subject but it seems that the focusing point is on the frontal rock at the foreground than on the subject.

The waterline also seems to be not so level.

Nice scenery with a beautiful sky.

Nice capture of the lighthouse I agree with Walter that lighthouse needs to be sharper I would like it sharp all the way through I would not have foreground rocks blurred
The colors look unreal to me I would desaturate a bit   Posted: 09/09/2023 21:39:03

I like your composition here. It gives me an overview of the scene. One little "nitpick", I would remove the vertical object at the horizon, to the right of the lighthouse. I agree the lighthouse could be sharper. Beautiful colors in the image, but they all have the same luminosity. I would try using some gradients or other means to change that. For instance, remove some of the saturation in the greens of the foreground. You could also crop to remove some of the foreground greens, still leaving the rocks. Lots to play with here.   Posted: 09/12/2023 13:04:46

A very different prospective using an ultra wide lens of this beautiful but also very photographed lighthouse. I really like it, and agree with the way you presented it being sharp from front to back.   Posted: 09/13/2023 15:26:42
