Dropping Fast by Walter Ho

May 2023 - Dropping Fast

About the Image(s)

This was taken during an event whereby the parachuters freefalled from a plane at a height of 6000 ft before opening up the parachute to land in front of the spectators' platform. I was at the front of the spectators' platform and took the picture using my Nikon D750. It was taken using Aperture priority. Aim Focus and Trigger all at the same time.

Nice lighting on the main subject that has crisp detail. Good placement of main subject in upper left. I do feel the second parachutist on the right is a distraction as is the space between the two. I would suggest cropping the main subject into a square format and adding a vignette. My version shows both suggestions; a white vignette is suggested here because of the white clouds.   Posted: 05/01/2023 19:12:44

Nice photo Walter. Focus is sharp and the lighting is good too. I like having both jumper in the frame and the smoke trail is just a plus. But with two subjects I find myself bouncing from one subject to the other.   Posted: 05/01/2023 19:14:07

Nice sharp capture I agree with Bill in focusing on the left parachute by cropping in You could also bring the second chute closer with content aware move in Photoshop if you use it. And make it larger
I would make the lower edges blue I find the white border Bill has added pulls my eyes from the main subject But you could add a two pixel off white stroke   Posted: 05/05/2023 01:13:40

Thank you for the feedback.

As it was not intended to be a portrait shot, I did not crop away all the background, leaving behind 1 parachuter in the rear.

I agree that the rear parachuter should be moved closer to the main subject.   Posted: 05/06/2023 01:29:03

I think you did a great job capturing this. I agree that there is a ping-pong effect here. I would crop similar to Bill'sexample. You could move the background jumper into the photo. I could go either way on that. I feel Bill's example has too much white added. I prefer your original.   Posted: 05/06/2023 13:22:56

I like the nicely focused bright colors in the shot. I would keep the second jumper in the image though closer to the main subject as others have suggested.   Posted: 05/14/2023 15:55:45
