Zinnia Mother and Child by Jon Joyce

July 2021 - Zinnia Mother and Child

About the Image(s)

I shot this image in our backyard raised flower and veggie plot with a tripod,105mm macro, at 1/80, f/13, ISO 200. I finished in Photoshop as the blossom had aged a bit and needed some cloning remove some small brown spots, etc. I also moved the bud closer to the blossom.

Nice composition, colors, and minor distractions with the blossom at the bottom on the photo a bit out of focus and the green leaves on the left leaf is sharp. Blur the green and see it might help balance. Wish I could grow flowers like you do.   Posted: 07/02/2021 12:49:51

I like the side-by-side of the blossom and the bud. I'd prefer that the blossom be in focus, perhaps at the expense of sharpness of the leaves on the left. I think I'd also like the leaves on the left and on the right to be of similar sharpness.   Posted: 07/02/2021 16:17:42

Nice photo Jon. Zinnias are one of my personal favorites and this is a nice one. I agree with Tom and Robert. IMO with the narrow focal plane of a 105 macro lens the only way to address their sharpness issue with the bloom would be to focus stack several images together. May I also suggest a little clean-up work on the dark background and the edges between the subject and the background

I, too, would like to see the zinnia more in focus, at least front and center of the flower. I'm torn as to whether the bud adds anything as it is placed in the composition. Because of the light on it and space between it and the mother flower, my eye is ping ponging between the two. Perhaps brightening and sharpening the mother flower will solve this.   Posted: 07/08/2021 12:25:44

I also love Zinnias and this is a lovely specimen The color is beautiful. The back center petals are nice and sharp I agree with the others that the front of the Zinnia is not sharp enough For me I prefer a blur in the back petals of a macro if not all is in focus I do not think the bud should stay I would crop in on the flower more as in attached image which removes a lot of the criticized areas
I also sharpened the center of flower more   Posted: 07/08/2021 19:55:08

I think this is a great image, but it feels a little dark to me. Or the flower feels dark. Zinnia's are beautiful and have such fabulous layers of petals. I would try to brighten up the flower portion of the image, but leave the dark background.   Posted: 07/14/2021 10:51:35
