June 2021 - Surf's Up

About the Image(s)

I shot this a couple of weeks ago in Rhode Island. I thought it would be interesting to change the image to black and white...trying to get a vintage feel. I cropped in a little and straightened out the horizon. ALl the processing done was in Lightroom. I shot this with my Nikon D3300, hand held. I would love thoughts. It is a departure from my usual stuff. I am trying to expand my horizons :)

The position of the surfers with respect to the waves seems perfect. I also like the succession of waves. To me, the image was improved by cropping to move the horizon further from the middle and by increasing the contrast. (I like B&W to be pretty contrasty.)   Posted: 06/03/2021 15:05:34

I'm always happy to see when we try something out of the norm for us. This is a great place to share this work. I agree, since there is really nothing of interest in the sky, I would crop it significantly. As the gentleman said to the barber, "take a little of the sides" too! BW works well. I'm guessing this was taken mid day?

Yes it was taken mid-day and it was not a super blue sky either.   Posted: 06/11/2021 12:25:42

Man, I want to go to the beach and this photo is not helping 😃
I agree that there is a bit to much empty sky. Maybe a old school widescreen crop something like 16:9. The waves give you nice leads and the large wave on one side balances the smaller ones on the the other. I think this keeps the feeling of the small surfers facing the expanding ocean.   Posted: 06/04/2021 11:39:00

Your imagination served you well. Two surfers with the entire ocean at their feet and theirs to conquer. Thanks for a thought provoking photograph.   Posted: 06/06/2021 09:11:09

Good job Jessica. I love the feel that this image conveys and agree with those that feel it could be as equally be conveyed with some of the sky removed. I also agree with Leonard and Robert that the image would be improved by increasing the contrast.   Posted: 06/10/2021 14:58:26
