Neck And Neck by Tim Sanders

May 2023 - Neck And Neck

About the Image(s)

This resulted from a challenge from a group which I mentor on. They questioned whether high speed sports could be captured on an entry level camera and lens. So for a while I used a Nikon D5200 with short zoom lens set at 28mm in this case 1/1250th second at f5 at ISO 400.
Processing from RAW with normal sharpening etc - converted to mono to remove distracting colour elements and increasing the contrast.

Well Tim, I think you exceeded this challenge. Nice and sharp and well composed. One of the factors that you didn't mention is that you might of only captured 1 image of this set of horses due to your good sense of timing and shutter speed. But could you have captured 3 frames and picked the best? Regardless you have a perfectly fantastic shoot.   Posted: 05/12/2023 21:27:27

I think I've seen this before, but maybe a slightly different position. In any case, like this image quite a lot. Good decision to convert it to B&W. Helps focus on the horses and riders. Would not change a thing. Well done.   Posted: 05/13/2023 19:15:28

Hi Both,
Firstly Bob. I think I did fire a burst but on this camera it probably only took two or three of which this would be the middle one.

Gunter, I did put one of a single horse in from my autumn visit and that was taken at the same fence.   Posted: 05/16/2023 10:41:55

Interesting challenge you accepted---I think the photographer makes more difference that the camera in many ways. You got a great shot at the peak of action which takes practice to get the shot at the right moment. Monochrome works well for the subject.   Posted: 05/19/2023 15:32:17

Super sharp. The rider closest is lifted off the seat. When the viewer relaxes his eye, the image becomes almost three dimensional. Great shot   Posted: 05/19/2023 21:06:28
