First to leave by Tim Sanders

December 2021 - First to leave

About the Image(s)

I shot this on a visit to the Cornish fishing port of Newlyn in October.
An early start caught the first fishing boat to leave harbour before sunrise or perhaps I should say the first one I saw leaving.
Shot on a Nikon D850 f4 160th second ISO 1100 with Nikkor 24-120 zoom at 98mm. No tripod - but the camera was firmly braced on some stonework.
Very little done in post-processing other than a slight crop and the removal of a couple of blemishes.

Well seen Tim to catch the "first" boat leaving and caught it without a merge behind the boat. I too light shooting at daybreak. Looks like the wind was already blowing. The wall and light pole divide the image but realize you probably didn't have any other options. I think I would of pushed up the iso further but the D850 can handle it. Assume you show in Raw, you might try to bring out the magentas and orange tones in the sky. I think you have a great image if you get a chance to tweak some of the tones and settings.   Posted: 12/09/2021 21:23:52

Thanks Bob I did shoot in RAW and will give your suggestions a go. And yes I did not have a chance to move position as the light did not last long and was gone before the next boat left.
I did move down to the wall shown in the picture is, a part of the old harbour but in the few minutes I took to get there the light had changed considerably.
Many thanks

So much to see and enjoy. Certainly grabbed my attention and communicated the message of an early morning activity. I like the composition quite a bit, with the exception of the foreground - can't get a handle on it, and my eyes keep going back to it. I assume it's a wall, but not sure - probably just me finding it a bit of a distraction. You did well in handling the complicated lighting situation. The sunrise sky is certainly very attractive, and has avoided the trend of showing exaggerated colours and tones - this is very natural, and creates a certain mood.   Posted: 12/10/2021 20:06:58

Kudos for getting up early! You certainly got the boat leaving in the right spot with no mergers. The foreground also bothers me as does the bright light in the foreground. Well seen.   Posted: 12/16/2021 15:30:49
