Decrepit Barrel by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

September 2021 - Decrepit Barrel

About the Image(s)

I took this some time ago at Bannock SP in Montana. I used an EM5 with 12-50mm lens at equivalent 66mm. ISO was 1600, SS 1/8 and aperture f 9. I used Topaz Sharpen AI which I am trying to learn to use. I love old towns and this was well preserved so there were lots of photo ops. I enjoy photographing details as well as over-all views. I did not clone anything out as I wanted to show it as I saw it. I look forward to suggestions.

I like the idea, but I don't know if it works very well. There's so much stuff in the image to pull our eyes away that the importance of the barrel seems to be lost. I tried darkening the barrel and the pick and I'm not sure there's any improvement. Doesn't seem to be up to your standards, Judy?   Posted: 09/16/2021 15:50:54

Great image as usual. I think I like it with some of that top part cropped off. Also I added a bit of saturation and some contrast and sharpening. Maybe it's no better but I just like to play.   Posted: 09/16/2021 15:52:20

Your crop is an improvement. I can see some reworking would help. Thanks.   Posted: 09/25/2021 09:55:11

Unfortunately, this image is not my cup of tea. It's unfortunately a snapshot picture for me. The barrel does not say 'decrepit', but old. But even that does not tell me a story. For my eyes, there is also too much going on in the picture, fighting the eyes to stay focused on the barrel. Technically it's actually pretty well done, but without impact on the viewer, it does not really matter - sorry - my opinion only.   Posted: 09/17/2021 08:37:35

All opinions are welcome; that is what study groups are for! In my club in the distant past, a friend and I were known for shooting junk and I continue the trend.   Posted: 09/25/2021 09:56:49

Neat subject, I think it would do better with cropping part of the right barrel to remove some of the elements. My eye tends to go towards the top right background at this time. I played around with it if you don't mind. Increased sharpness (Clarity in LR) and texture, added a grunge vignette & re-cropped.   Posted: 09/18/2021 13:54:05

I like your crop too. I will continue to play with the image and try blurring the background and cleaning up some objects.   Posted: 09/25/2021 09:57:50

I love photographing old and decrepit items as well Judy. Often this has to be in documentary mode and that is very much how I view your picture. I cannot really find a crop or process to lift it into an artistic mode with out taking the barrel and setting it against a different background in post-production.   Posted: 09/25/2021 12:07:32
