Straw Hat by Judy Burr, APSA, MPSA

May 2021 - Straw Hat

About the Image(s)

We were wandering around southern Maryland (Port Tobacco) and found an old one-room school which was open for show. The hat in the entrance caught my eye. I doubt it is old but it is probably representative of the day. I know it is centered, but I think there were distracting items around it. I always appreciate your comments and suggestions.

Hi Judy,
I just love the simplicity of this image and the complementary color palette. The circular nature of the hat and it's colorful band also work really well with the strong dark wall panelling.   Posted: 05/09/2021 11:10:31

Hi Judy, I think this hat works well when isolated as the subject. The red ribbon and pink flowers work well with the straw color and green background. I also like the details in the dark paneling behind. Only nit I have is the "light" line that runs between the 2 ribbons . Perhaps that could be cloned?   Posted: 05/09/2021 15:21:55

Thanks for the wake-up on the line--I never noticed it! I have already corrected it.I also trimmed a bit of the ribbon that had frayed. The school was very old and I didn't want to clean up the background too much.   Posted: 05/13/2021 16:33:17

I like the minimalism of this image. The lines and shapes are eye-catching and the colors mix well. I think a little clean-up is in order. In addition to the line Bob mentioned, there are a couple more on the extreme right, just below the lower green area.   Posted: 05/10/2021 14:39:50

You are right--clean up is necessary! Sometimes we all need to have others show us what we missed.

Thanks.   Posted: 05/13/2021 16:34:11

This is a very sweet image. Except for that white line I don't think I would change anything. I have a place in my house where this would look great on the wall. :-)   Posted: 05/13/2021 19:27:23
