Bull Moose by Karen Harris

October 2024 - Bull Moose

About the Image(s)

I took this photo of a bull moose at Lily Lake near
Estes Park, Colorado earlier this week. He was accompanied by a female and their teenager, but I could never get a good shot of the three of them together. I shot this with my zoom at 300 and at ISO 800. I used the high ISO because he was lounging in a rather shady spot late in the afternoon. I didn't mess with a lot of camera adjustments because I wanted to get out of there before he killed me. ??™?

Another nice nature shot by Karen Harris. Nice and sharp, and simple and effective composition. Unfortunately, the tree growing out of his head is a bit distracting - but being a nature shot, you get what you're given.   Posted: 10/08/2024 15:21:30

Yes, another beautiful wildlife shot. It's amazing how often you come up with these great shots. I agree, that rack on his head is imposing. I might try to crop off the droppings in the bottom front, just to the bottom of the stick. No other recommendations. Great job.   Posted: 10/08/2024 16:45:23

For me, the busy background and color are distracting. I cropped, blurred the background, toned down the yellows and greens. Overall though, a nice capture of what had to be amazing to see in person.   Posted: 10/08/2024 18:47:02

I had to erase the tree from his head and crop out the foreground. I know, it's not acceptable for a nature/wildlife shot. It was too impressive an image for me not to have done so! The bull's wild eyes are (luckily) not glaring at the photographer!   Posted: 10/09/2024 22:57:53

The really sharp eye really draws the attention. I think opening the lens up, perhaps even wide open would have separated this impressive fellow from his background.   Posted: 10/19/2024 20:33:22

Karen, Another great nature shot. I am glad you got out of the way before you were attacked. Somethings are not worth the risk. I have seen so many "photographers" get too close to wildlife, especially at Yellowstone. They need to get a long lens or buy a postcard.

I love the rack and position of the bull. The tree is a minor distraction, but with nature, you have to get what you can. Great images.   Posted: 10/23/2024 17:22:59
