January 2022 - Anna Hummingbird

About the Image(s)

Anna's hummingbirds winter in Victoria as there is usually enough food and temperatures rarely drop below freezing for long. This year we have had a cold snap and I was changing my feeders every few hours to prevent the food from turning to ice. Our resident hummer was visiting often which allowed
the opportunity to capture her at the feeder.

Handheld taken with Nikon Z6- f6 iso 100 320 sec 69mm

I find it amazing that as far north as Victoria the hummers don't migrate south! Great catch for a hand-held with no flash. The oof icicles in the background add to the story. I might have a tendency to lighten the image a little, but lucky catch, this.   Posted: 01/10/2022 06:13:17

Thanks, I did lighten the photo but see I could have gone further. Hummers are quick, but the cold make them slower so easier to capture.

Hummingbirds are so hard to photograph. You did an excellent job. It is sharp and the focus is on the bird. I like the wing and the ice.   Posted: 01/13/2022 13:27:25

Great photo and hand-held, too! I like its tiny feet and a glimpse of its wing. I have seen many hummingbird photos that had no wing showing because of the high camera speed. Yours looks more real-life.   Posted: 01/13/2022 15:48:27
