Fall Colors by Renee Schaefer

October 2021 - Fall Colors

About the Image(s)

Fall colors are beautiful in Maryland. I cropped this image a little and
burned the background to get rid of the interfering brightness.

Great capture of a butterfly and the matching tones of the flowers! Your focal point is the butterfly, which is sharp, but the depth of field is blurring the flower in the right corner in front. It works but I would try a vignette darker in that corner. Cropping down a bit from the top and from the left edge and you have a square. I think this would be a beautiful tile or small minature photo!   Posted: 10/08/2021 16:00:38

Great clarity on the butterfly. I find my eye drawn to the yellow flower on the left. Wonder if there is a way to make it a little less distracting?   Posted: 10/12/2021 13:57:29

Though the butterfly is the main subject of the image, I feel that it is having to compete against the large orange flowers, and the smaller yellow flower to the left. To me , we need to make the butterfly stand out more, I would suggest by increasing its sharpness relative to the rest of the image. You could also reduce the saturation of the flowers, cropping as has been suggested could also help.   Posted: 10/13/2021 04:32:39

Love the butterfly. Lots of detail, colour and patterns. It must have stood still for you. Good job on the background, nice blur without increased noise.
I quite like the the other flowers as I like my eye to wander around an image to evaluate the scene. And the colours are interesting. They give the butterfly a whole platform to explore.

Butterflies are great subjects, very interesting and pretty. I like the idea of a square crop & vignette to focus your attention on the butterfly. I like the yellow flower, but the orange flowers are very strong. Possibly a little less saturation would help.   Posted: 10/14/2021 10:03:50

I would suggest cropping the image to a square in such a way that the bright orange flowers do not compete with the butterfly for attention. I also, in images like this, often apply a slight vignette.   Posted: 10/31/2021 16:15:07
