Space Shuttle Discovery by Jose Cartas

May 2023 - Space Shuttle Discovery

About the Image(s)

Taken at the Udvar-Hazy Center of the Air and Space Museum. I cropped tightly on the shuttle to concentrate on its front view. It was just a matter of some patience to wait until no one walked (or stood) in front of it. The only post-processing was darkening the background to eliminate some distracting lines. Technical specifications: 90mm. lens, 1/50 sec. at f/5.6, ISO 1250, handheld.

Hi Jose, an impressive image - my first intake was the head of an alien robot in a sci-fi story. I love the way you have made the blue and golden light glow on the surface, and the centered symmetric composition works well.   Posted: 05/09/2023 14:31:53

It is a striking image. The central composition, especially with the tight crop, works very well I think. Also like how the US flag (i suppose it is) on top of the shuttle gives added color and adds to the central composition.   Posted: 05/10/2023 04:50:03

I agree that the central composition works well. I guess that the lighting conditions must have been difficult inside the museum because I find the white area on the nose of the shuttle to be "too hot" and also the yellow 'stuff' under the nose.   Posted: 05/10/2023 10:35:13

Unique composition and viewpoint. I agree with Mervyn that if there is room to lower the highlights without causing the whites to go gray on the shuttle, it might help.   Posted: 05/10/2023 15:08:05

I'm with the prior comments, a couple of areas seem a little too hot, but it is unique composition that I think works for this subject   Posted: 05/12/2023 16:22:54

This is a compelling image with the shuttle faced on. You have cropped the wings away and makes me wonder what it is at first glance. The blue, red, yellow and white colors look great. I think darkening the highlight a bit might help, and/or rasing the dark area on the nose as well.   Posted: 05/13/2023 05:09:06
