About the Image(s)

I just returned from a photo trip to the Faroe Islands. I was told to expect rapidly changing weather in the mid 40s Fahrenheit, but except for the last day, it was mostly around freezing. I guess that worked in our favor as we had occasional snow, which was not normal for this time of year. We visited this location twice, but had better opportunities the first day with rapidly changing dramatic skies. Holding on to the tripod on this day was difficult with the bone chilling winds we had, but I think well worth it. I worked this image up in the Farroes, as I knew I would not have time to pick one out when I got home. Processed in LR in HDR, used Auto, tweaked the adjustments, contrast development, and enhanced the sky with the auto masking tool. Had to remove a water spot from the lens due to the occasional snow showers.

Hi Bob, what an adventure! The image mediates effectively the harsh conditions where the tiny church stands there against the huge forbidding mountain. The snow and the clouds add to the story, and I think that your post-processing has worked very well. I think that it might look great also in BW?   Posted: 05/09/2023 13:19:42

I admire your persistence and patience! Sometimes while on the field, sometimes in post-processing. Here you didn't do much in post-processing but endured a lot while taking the shot. But, as usual, your efforts paid off. It is interesting the contrast between the church and the massive hill, but because of the bright color on the church the image looks balanced. The clouds are an added bonus to the scene. My only suggestion would be to remove the two poles to the right of the church.   Posted: 05/09/2023 18:04:54

I debated the poles, and will probably remove them for the pictorial version (versus Travel).   Posted: 05/10/2023 08:08:32

I find this be be a very dramatic image. My eye goes to the warm tones on the roof of the church against the cool tones of the mountain behind. The stream / waterfall is a nice counterpoint to the rest of the image and keeps my eye moving around the image. I agree with Jose that I might remove the poles to the right of the church and I find the small building (?) on the left edge a little distracting. I might have cropped in from the left or used the clone or heal tools. It's hard to tell from this image, but I'm wondering if you could get more detail on the church steeple.   Posted: 05/09/2023 19:50:47

That object on the left is actually a part of a small pond and a rock. It is easy to see in a larger version. I debated cropping it out, but then the church goes too close to the edge. I may clone it out for the pictorial version. Thanks.   Posted: 05/10/2023 08:13:19

Very nice and dramatic image! I agree with Terry to crop a bit from the left to get rid of the small building or else use the heal tool in PS. I find the addition of blue in the image wonderful but maybe a bit too much? (or maybe it is my computer screen) It looks a bit unnatural on the cliffs in my opinion.   Posted: 05/10/2023 04:39:46

Once again your composition is spot on. I like the balance of the church on the left and waterfall on the right. The poles don't bother me, nor does the rock on the left.
My only suggestion is to lighten the dark shadows on the mountain behind the church slightly.   Posted: 05/10/2023 10:12:51

I like the color palette of the image besides the composition, the contrast and remoteness of the landscape. The blue and yellow create a nice complement. The way you have post processed and highlighted the waterfall looks beautiful and adds an additional element to the scene.   Posted: 05/13/2023 04:41:42
