Inspecting the Beans by Tony Au Yeong

September 2021 - Inspecting the Beans

About the Image(s)

This is a photo taken about 3 years ago in Malaysia during a visit to a very small coffee factory producing homemade coffee, Title: “ Inspecting the coffee beans”. The man is inspecting the cooked coffee beans before grinding them into powder. There are blow out of the highlights in the color image. I hope converting it to B&W could hide the defects.

I believe the story is most impressive in BW. There are many fine details, and even the area with fans in the back are interesting and things look steamy. I don't see how this can be improved. Very nice!   Posted: 09/05/2021 17:00:10

I love the action but particularly the expression that you have captured on his face. I understand that you want to show the environment, but I don't think you need all the fans on the right.   Posted: 09/10/2021 13:16:25

The photo tells a story and the B&W rendering made it more powerful. I like his positioning on the picture and his expression, plus the rim light marking his arm. Some of the blowouts of the color image are still in this version, such as on his eyes and the spot on his cheek (not sure how much of it you can correct). The rendition of the out of focus person in the background looks washed out and not natural, but maybe that's how you captured it. I also find the fan touching his back a little distracting.   Posted: 09/10/2021 19:43:29
