About the Image(s)

Photo taken in early morning in West Java. Have two versions (muted colours and BW), not sure which one I like better. Probably I like the BW better, as it is more simple, and I flipped the image in this one, to try to make a stronger composition.

What do you all think?

The original and final are better to me. I believe I prefer the final BW, though, for the grasses in the water. There is almost a glistening effect there. If you go with the original colored version, I would saturate the red in the boats and remove the debris along the edge. A vignette might help disguise that too.   Posted: 09/05/2021 17:23:26

Definitely prefer the black and white version and I agree that the flip makes for a stronger composition. I would like to see a little more contrast in the boat to bring out the blacks.   Posted: 09/10/2021 15:21:10

Thanks Mervyn.. It is always a matter of personal taste I realise. But yes, I somehow also prefer the BW version. Will try to give the image more contrast and see how that comes out. Thanks.   Posted: 09/22/2021 22:32:34

I agree with your decision to flip the image, because it's more pleasant to the view. I wouldn't change anything in terms of composition, since all elements work well here. I'm undecided between the color and the B&W versions. In the B&W photo I would lightly increase the contrast. The color version is almost monochromatic (which should favor a B&W treatment), but it produces a more somber mood. As suggested by Belinda, saturating the reds in the boat should improve the color (flipped) picture.   Posted: 09/10/2021 19:54:48

Thanks Jose. Will try to increase the saturation of the reds of the boats, and flip the color image as well, to see if I like it more than the BW. Thanks for the feedback!   Posted: 09/22/2021 22:34:02

As Jose states, I am torn between the two versions. There is not much color, but the blue tones do add a bit of drama. Flipping it was a big improvement.   Posted: 09/22/2021 18:37:46

Thanks Bob. Yes I agree that I like the flipped version more. Also not too sure about which image I like most, BW or color.. ;) Thanks for the feedback.   Posted: 09/22/2021 22:34:50

I like the B&W and flipped image. The calm water and the foggy background help to create a feeling of tranquility. The foreground, the boats and the background add dimension to this nice image.   Posted: 09/25/2021 10:28:16
