The Black Church (Iceland) by Anges van der Logt

June 2021 - The Black Church (Iceland)

About the Image(s)

Photo taken of the black church in Iceland in 2019. It was a gloomy and rainy day, and tried to get a nice composition anyway. Made use of the pool of water in the grass to get a (partial) reflection. Any comments or things I could have done better?

I think the mood fits Iceland very well. This composition is nice, although you could crop some off the left and a smaller amount off the bottom and still have a composition that works too, as it might put more focus on the church. My suggestion might be to select the church and foreground and apply just a slight brightening using something like curves to give some additional contrast. This leaves the threatening sky intact. I would suggest looking at cloning out the piece of snow in the left side of the reflection (or toning it down),as I feel it draws my eye. I have no issue with the snow/ice in the bottom right, as it is not bright.   Posted: 06/07/2021 14:19:41

I like the mood and the tone of the image. I think the reflection does add an element of interest to the photo. On the other hand, it seems that the visual weight on the right side is more than the left. I wonder if it would work to put the image in a vertical frame?   Posted: 06/11/2021 10:41:26

Will certainly try a vertical crop as well. Thanks for the tip!   Posted: 06/14/2021 01:32:45

I tend to crop tight, but in this case the extra space adds context to the image, which to me looks very balanced despite the large empty space on the left. Even without your explanation I would have guessed that the photo was taken in Iceland: it has all the elements of the country. Maybe Bob is right, and you need to darken a little the white snow on the left, but I don't find it particularly distracting.   Posted: 06/11/2021 19:04:31

Sometimes gloomy days are best at surprising us with nice images. This is a striking scene in a country that offers so many! The reflections are very special. The only thing I see to change is a slightly tighter cropping. On left (up to the snow) and a little off the bottom, and maybe the tiniest bit from the top. I like the snow patch and wouldn't want to lose it.   Posted: 06/12/2021 09:07:47

This is my kind of image that I enjoy photographing. I love the mood, the reflection in the puddle, and the mountains in the background. I would not change a thing as I like the composition as it is! Even the bright snow compliments the scene.   Posted: 06/16/2021 09:18:47
