The Incredible Bluebonnet by Julie Chapa

May 2022 - The Incredible Bluebonnet

About the Image(s)

Every spring a carpet of bluebonnets pop up across the street from where I work. It’s not a very scenic area but luckily we had a windless morning and a great opportunity to take some closeup shots of the flowers. I found one flower off by itself that was in good shape. Photo taken Canon 5d mark iv, 50mm lens at 4.5 aperture, ISO 400, 1/350 sec. Darkened the background with LR masking, and cloned out any miscellaneous leaves and weeds in PS.

It's a lovely flower, but in this view I believe the whole flower should be sharp and it isn't. Too much of a blur at the base for me.   Posted: 05/13/2022 20:41:29

Bluebonnets are a special to me.. The dark B/G makes this one stand out Maybe you could sharpen a little on the right. Actually, there was probably a little breeze a'blowin' . Nice job.   Posted: 05/17/2022 09:36:27

I think you did a great job of capturing the color of the bluebonnet. I'm not a fan of isolating a flower against a black background and I agree that the out of focus portion seems odd in that context. It does seem to me to give the impression that the flower is being held "off-stage" by someone, so that may justify it. I like the sharpness in the rest of the flower.

Great color and simple composition. As others have noted the flower it is not in focus all over. Focus stacking would work well in this situation. Also, adding a white stroke around the frame and tilting the flower so the stem comes out of the left bottom corner would make it pop some.   Posted: 05/21/2022 10:46:57

It's certainly an image that is good to look at! I agree with most of the comments above - a little more sharpness wouldn't go amiss, and as Eric says I think it would look good if tilted.   Posted: 05/23/2022 02:51:39
