Ice Crystals by Abe Chen

November 2021 - Ice Crystals

About the Image(s)

This photo was taken December 2010 along the shore of the Holmes Lake in Lincoln, NE. It takes a "perfect" winter storm to create such various forms/shapes of ice crystals--unique, fascinating, spectacle...In 40+ years living in Lincoln, this is only time I have seen such scene. I quickly set up and got 300+ shot exposures of the scene. Camera settings: f/8, 1/640, ISO-500 EV+0.3 with my Nikon D300 and Nikkor 105 mm micro lens f/2.8 mm. Tripod was used. In post processing, LR and photoshop CS4 were used to edit the image.

Interesting image. It looks like a gaggle of geese, (with their feet). The ice is clear and sharp.   Posted: 11/11/2021 10:13:27

As you point out this is a unique image. The composition is good as are the colors. Some selective blurring of the background may bring out the crystals out more.   Posted: 11/21/2021 10:59:28

I have to smile at how much the ice formations do look like a group of dancing geese who got stuck when the ice froze them. I think the bright (but not blown-out) whites of the ice make the ice structures clearly the star of the show, but it would probably enhance the effect to blur the background a bit to help separate them from it.   Posted: 11/21/2021 15:01:09
