Great photo...I think I would have went for a landscape went crop. And worked on the exposure and highlights? Perhaps in light room.
Had you waited a few minutes you would have lost your sun, but I would recommend visiting the same beach, when there's less cloud cover and re-shoot your photo when the sun is more on the horizon or close to it...keep up the good work Mahalo Gordy   Posted: 10/05/2024 02:05:03

Thank you for the comments. I did take some photos in landscape but had not thought about cropping this one that way. I live in Richmond, Va USA...so...visiting that beach again will have to go on my wish list.   Posted: 10/06/2024 16:09:28

I like the figures on the beach, especially the one about to enter the sunlight on the sand. I quite like the darkness of the image , as it's a bit different from the norm - ditto the portrait crop.
One big error - the horizon isn't level :)
I can't quite see Newfoundland - maybe a longer lens next time.
I've been on that beach many a time! I hope you enjoyed driving on the Cornish roads.   Posted: 10/06/2024 22:14:45

Thank you Brian. My perennial problem - holding the camera straight. And I still miss level even though I have a gyroscope on the display. I think I agree that the darker version is better. Here's a straightened version. Oh...and I was glad to have my English daughter-in-law handle the driving!

As soon as I posted your photo I wanted to crop, but have just gotten the time to try it. Here's my version focusing on the sun and the people on the beach. I was unsure now much of the dark area to leave at the bottom, but kept a bit because it defined the reflection on the sand. Because that edge was black I added a tiny grey stroke to separate it if it was seen against a background.

I like that crop very much. What do you mean by adding a gray stroke?   Posted: 10/08/2024 14:51:35

In Photoshop a stroke is a quick way of adding a line around the photo, usually to separate it from the background -- sort of like a border or frame. It's under Edit>Stroke. Since the background of our main page is black, sometimes it helps to delineate where a black section of a photo ends. Since the background of the comment section is gray it doesn't show up.   Posted: 10/09/2024 00:26:02

Very helpful. I have long wondered how to do that.   Posted: 10/09/2024 01:06:45

I agree with Audrey's suggestion. The original picture follows the 1/3 rule but there is too much empty space in the top 2/3. I like the landscape shot you put up for reference - peaceful beach with a subtle sense of casualness. I may do a crop to show the small sand formations... black and white or sepia...   Posted: 10/08/2024 14:45:55

I think I like it in color because of the red line from the sun. But I can certainly try some of these suggestions. Thank you.   Posted: 10/08/2024 14:52:47

Bollin, Audrey's suggestions have added to the beauty of the scene.   Posted: 10/14/2024 15:26:31

Very nice. Now I am wrestling with the ratios...1 to 1 or what you have done. Thank you for the feedback.   Posted: 10/19/2024 18:47:45
