About the Image(s)

I wanted to focus on the shape of this flower and really liked the side profile. The flower was photographed outdoors in a public garden, camera was handheld.

Image was taken with my Olympus OM-D E-M5 MkII with a 60mm macro lens. The camera settings were manual focus, aperture priority, f4, 1/250s, -0.3 stop.

Simple image adjustments in ACR and the following processing steps in Photoshop:
Painted over the pink areas of the background in green.

Reduced the saturation of the background, increased the brightness and reduced the contrast.

Cooling filter added to image.

3 different coloured cloud layers painted on and masked off the flower.

Colour toning modified using Nik Efex Cross Processing.

Vignette applied using Nik Efex Darken Lighten Centre

My only suggestion would be a bit more contrast between the subject and background. So I went into Photoshop - image-adjustments-vibrance-saturation and increased both just a tad. What do you think?   Posted: 08/01/2022 09:35:22

Hi Bev, thanks for your comment. I think you prefer more vibrant colours than me. I tend to prefer keeping things a bit more subtle. I do often boost vibrance in my images but rarely alter the saturation as I feel this can give artificial looking colours.   Posted: 08/18/2022 02:22:48

Hi Carol! Well, I must confess, I like the original as it is presented.

The out of focus background colors compliments the subject ... I think the combination is outstanding and very engaging! It would be nice to see more of these types of compositions from you .. where you are using various degrees of lens Bokeh in the design process. My favorite lens for this type of work is a fast (prime) 50mm. Lovely work!!   Posted: 08/03/2022 18:47:34

What a gorgeous flower. This image is so peaceful with a Zen like quality. I love the colors you chose for the background and the way the stem just gradually drifts away into the clouds. Very nice.   Posted: 08/04/2022 16:56:12

This is really nicely done. The position of the poppy is unusual and gives the image a unique look. The way you captured the light on the petal ruffles creates s sense of delicate transparency. The white spot at the base of the sepals brings the eye up. Really nicely done!   Posted: 08/09/2022 19:18:14
