About the Image(s)

This image was taken at Capitol Reef shortly after a rainstorm. The sky was delivering the most incredible lightshow imaginable. Most people were shooting in the opposite direction looking directly at the sunset instead of the surrounding sky, therefore they missed the real event.

The image was taken in camera raw with a NikonD800 using a Nikkor 240120mm lens. Focal length was 49mm with ISO 100. Exposure was 1/8 sec. at f/13. A tripod was used.

Obviously, my intention was to capture the incredible sky show that nature was delivering. I have many more pictures as the sunset progressed. When processing images, I attempt to maximize color and contrast while still maintaining a realistic looking image.

This is an HDR composed of two images, one exposed for the sky, and one exposed for the land. I cropped the image into a vertical image in order to focus on the rainbow. Post processing included exposure balancing, adding clarity, as well as saturation and contrast.

Laura, it's so rare to get a rainbow in a sunset. The rainbow is in the opposite direction from the sun shining on falling rain. I like the finished image, however I would like to see more of the ridge on the right - crop 20% from the right side of the original so that the ridge line on right and left are equal (one third down from the top instead of midpoint right edge) Jim   Posted: 10/01/2021 14:12:06

I did struggle with where to crop. I didn't want the rainbow dead center, and I don't love square images. I'm definitely open to cropping suggestions.   Posted: 10/01/2021 18:38:21

I tried a different crop as you suggested.   Posted: 10/09/2021 14:38:42

I have been working more on my image. I think this crop might work better.   Posted: 10/07/2021 16:33:31

Laura, The foreground shows good details.

Unfortunately some 'noise' can be seen after your cropping.

I think the photo would have been much better had there been a focus point such as a person in the foreground.   Posted: 10/18/2021 23:35:30

Laura, I like your crop on 10/7. It brings out the best colors in teh sky and in those sections in the mountains. If you have noise, get the new Topaz DeNoise AI.Its does amazing things. Topaz Sharpener AI brings out amazing details. Jim   Posted: 10/19/2021 00:47:47

I agree with Jim's initial commentsYour second crop improves the picture, but I would crop on the right just a bit to the first little peak. The light streak in the sky adds dynamism byby providing a conflicting line. Really a great photo   Posted: 10/25/2021 11:06:10
