About the Image(s)

A couple of months ago, before my recent surgery, my local camera club had an in class project of still life where we were to bring in inanimate objects and arrange them anyway we wanted before photographing them and then doing final processing for a presentable image. There were several scenes set up around the room as we roamed around and photographed the various setups. I was attracted to this particular table because of the shapes of the different objects and the inclusion of flowers that I thought added quite a bit to the scene. I used a high ISO on this image thinking that I would bring in enough natural light, but I was wrong and the incandescent light in the room was not particularly warm. Anyway in modification I did a lot of cropping and adjustments in brightness and saturation before I came up with this. I then added a mask to give it the antique look and settled on what you see here. Technicals: Canon 7D; 1/320; F5; ISO 4000.

Very well done, Al! The final cropping and the warm greens and yellows, contrasting with the metal and glass containers make for an excellent final image. I like how the background turned out as well. The only thing that detracts, ever so slightly, is the whitish streak in the upper right corner. Can't find too much wrong here -- enjoyable to look at. I would think this is competition worthy and would make a fine print.   Posted: 05/01/2023 18:48:29

I love how this came out Al. Your background and vignette are perfect. I think you were wise to eliminate the other two glass vases. The glass can create too many hot spots. I would like to see just one area that is a bit sharper - such as the rose on the right maybe. But overall very well done!   Posted: 05/02/2023 10:05:05

I agree -- including the vase and glass would have completely thrown off the balance of the composition.   Posted: 05/03/2023 19:33:50

Excellent effect on the background of this Still Life Al. Not much to improve other than cleaning up the glass on the right side and perhaps add more room all around and crop a bit from the bottom.   Posted: 05/04/2023 16:50:07

I like this - the "painterly" effect works well here. I'm not sure but I think I see a little ghosting of the glass on the right side - and the flower stems. Overall though, great job.   Posted: 05/25/2023 11:02:41

We have a couple of "Still Life" masters in our club and this image would be stiff competition. The composition is appealing with the angle of the container and stems of the roses. The antique affect truly compliments. I will suggest lightening the white streak in the upper right and the small one near the top right of the container.   Posted: 05/27/2023 09:27:40
