About the Image(s)

"Sunset" is a view of the Frankfort, Michigan, lighthouse. This time of day always attracts fisherman to the pier, and you can see several of them fishing out near the end. I did basic edits in Lightroom. I also tried to emphasize the reflection of the lighthouse on the pier by using the Lightroom brush tool set to contrast and clarity. Then I took the image into Photoshop and replaced the sky to make a more dramatic look. This is not a Photoshop sky, but the sky in this same location or nearby, on another evening.

I really like the way you finished this one off. My wife and I vacationed in Michigan a few years ago and spent some time in Traverse City. Now I see that Frankfort, Michigan was just a few miles southwest and I missed the opportunity to see this beautiful lighthouse. I've never seen a square lighthouse before. Your capture was excellent. Your cropping was exactly on the mark as well. I also applaud you for changing the sky. Excellent image and very expertly finished.   Posted: 08/03/2022 15:04:26

Isn't it amazing what we can do with photos now. You've turned an average lighthouse image into a stunning one. I like the way you have brought out the reflections on the pier and made the people stand out more. The change in the sky really makes it even better. Great job.   Posted: 08/03/2022 21:57:46

Needless to say Peggy, you did an excellent job of bringing this image to life. Your sky and clouds are just perfect for this image. Yet, I can't help but wonder if a little more foreground would give a longer sweep to the lighthouse? Also, what if darkening the reflection would make it stand out better and what if you were able to take the picture from further left, creating a diagonal line to the lighthouse? Would it be better from the left or from the right? Yes, an interesting lighthouse and certainly a good place to return at different seasons.

There's a lot to like about your picture...the restrained, almost pastel feel of the coloring ... the interesting clouds on the left to fill in the void of the original ... the slashing line of clouds leading from the right toward the lighthouse....the line of the walkway sending your eyes right to the structure....even small things, like the red shirt stand out because of the subtle coloring....nice contrast between the natural and the artificial. I wonder if the bollard (I think that's what you call the thing that you use to tie up a mooring line) in the foreground was removed it might eliminate a distraction. Great job!   Posted: 08/09/2022 11:09:13

This is a lovely image. I like the gentle angle of the dock and the fractured reflection with bollards in the middle. I find my eyes lingering to explore each feature that gently lead to the lighthouse. Exploring the people and then moving up the lighthouse to the top and eventual sky. Nice pastel colors. The only thing I may suggest is cloning out the rocks next to the dock.   Posted: 08/14/2022 12:07:47
