About the Image(s)

This image was taken at Zoo Miami in January and as the lighting was quite poor it took a bit of an effort in PhotoShop to bring out the dark areas of this monkey, known as a siamang. Siamangs are native to parts of southeast Asia and are currently an endangered species. They are very loud and sometimes confused with howler monkeys. As well, I wanted to remove most of the background so as to make the picture appear more natural, as the “trees” were probably made of concrete. This gave me an opportunity to try out my recently purchased Nikon 200-500 mm zoom lens, and hooked up to my D500 gave me an effective focal length of just about 750 mm. Hand held, and in order to freeze the action I had to really boost the ISO.

Well done Jerry, not only in processing, but in photographing and composing as well. My only suggestions for improvement are perhaps to crop just a little more from the left and brighten and sharpen the eyes a bit.   Posted: 05/14/2022 15:40:51

What an excellent image. You have captured the expression perfectly in the posture and clarity of the composition is really excellent.Even with the elevated ISO your level of noise is very low. Must've been a great deal of work to eliminate that background log   Posted: 05/16/2022 12:42:01

Great capture! To me this seems a little over-sharpened. I agree with Joe about sharpening the eyes. I tried to take a little of the sharpening down on the body. I did leave the log in as it seemed more natural to me.   Posted: 05/16/2022 14:59:31

Nice work Jerry. The background is great. The sharpening could be toned down on the pouch under the neck and the open mouth. The first place my eye goes is to the mouth - and I should be looking in his eyes instead. Congratulations on that new lens! I'm envious! :)
