About the Image(s)

This is the Grand Island East Channel Lighthouse on Lake Superior. It was opened in 1868, and so meets our assignment of something old. This picture is from a couple of years ago so I don't know exactly what steps I took to correct it. My goal was to bring out the effect of the late afternoon sun on the side of the lighthouse as well as to isolate it - get rid of the tourist boat that had stopped in front. I also found, as I worked with the image, that there was some nice early fall color.

I really like the way you put this image in final form. We took this same boat ride in Lake Superior by this lighthouse several years ago but my image did not come on nearly as clear as yours did. I'm originally from Minneapolis and my wife and I took an RV trip to this region. Your addition of the lighting to enhance the image is great. I think your cropping and composition of the final product, and the detail of the old wood really brings out the age of this lighthouse. Great job.   Posted: 06/02/2021 09:39:15

Beautiful coloring without a doubt -- you really drew that out from the original! You chose the correct (vertical) orientation -- I just wish the structure was a little less centered. Still, a great job, and it certainly looks like fall is just around the corner.   Posted: 06/05/2021 05:59:52

I agree it's a little too centered. Unfortunately, all the extra "space" was on the left side of the lighthouse and the boat blocked the right side. Actually it's the tower that is so centered rather than the building, but it has the same effect.   Posted: 06/05/2021 14:04:25

Could you have cloned out about the front third of the boat? There seems to be enough material to work with.   Posted: 06/06/2021 06:05:00

I think so Jerry.   Posted: 06/07/2021 11:57:33

I was debating on whether the water could be cropped down - which would bring it a little more off-center. I think I like the amount of water though. You've brought out the texture in the wood and the colors in the trees very well. Nice work.   Posted: 06/05/2021 12:47:23

I like the vertical, centered format. For this image and composition, it's perfect.   Posted: 06/09/2021 08:41:36

I agree, Mike. The rule-of-thirds doesn't always apply and I like the image as it is as well.   Posted: 06/09/2021 17:14:45

Yes, I too love the colors on and around the lighthouse. Yes, I am also sure that after cloning out the boat, you have various other composition possibilities.   Posted: 06/09/2021 18:22:11

Spot On with the final editing. I wouldn't change a thing. Just lovely!   Posted: 06/22/2021 12:27:25
