About the Image(s)

I captured this image from an old truck at our ranch. I played around with various angles and views of the truck and thought this was the most interesting from a pattern standpoint. Nothing great but it’s at least old! Taken with a Canon 7D with an EF 24-105 lens shot at 85 mm, with an ISO 400, f/6.3 at 1/125 second. I cropped down in Lightroom to bring the attention to the steering wheel and did minor adjustments.

This surely is an old steering wheel and column. I really enjoy going through junkyards and finding new photographic treasures every time. You had the good fortune of having your own example on hand. I do like the composition with the pitted windshield as the background. I think the image would have been enhanced if you could have lightened up the dashboard to bring more of the rust color out. A little bit of sharpening might also have helped in better defining the lines of the steering wheel and column handles.   Posted: 06/02/2021 09:44:01

I'm torn between liking the centering of the wheel and the composition of the original where it is off-center and shows more of the dashboard. It's nice and sharp on the wheel and the dashboard just blurred enough to make the wheel stand out.   Posted: 06/05/2021 12:50:20

Judging by the windshield, this seems to have been a "gathering of eagles" meet up spot for many years! Since the steering wheel is the main focus perhaps it could be brightened up a bit to reveal more details and texture. I don't know if you could've done it but the wheel might have been cocked a bit to give more of an angle for the spokes.   Posted: 06/07/2021 06:18:59

I agree with Marti - I like the original rectangular crop better than the square. If this were my image, I'd add some grunge with Topaz or Nik software. It seems the perfect subject for that kind of treatment. Very nice capture, and lucky for you to have access to this right at home!   Posted: 06/07/2021 12:22:10

At first glance it gave me the impression of something that has been sitting under water. Mike, it is amazing of all these treasures you have on your farm. Yes, the wheel shows its age. Apart of the ideas mentioned, I suppose you could consider other possibilities, such as close-ups, selective focussing from the wheel, to the wheel, from the windshield, to it, etc, etc...   Posted: 06/09/2021 20:08:10

Great suggestions. I did try various viewpoints but this was the best. I also had to watch for rattlesnakes under the truck! They like to hide around this junk.   Posted: 06/22/2021 13:17:24

I agree with Marti and Peggy. This would be a classic piece for the grunge look with the rectangular photo. I would also try to lighten the dash to bring out the details.   Posted: 06/22/2021 12:43:00
