I'm so glad we have a Brit amongst us. I saw your photo and said "wait a minute, that's a common merganser". And guess what, it's the same species, just a different name across the pond. I love these ducks. Did you know they nest in holes in trees? (I just learned that little bit of trivia a few years ago).
The whole photo is a little too bright and it's obvious you already tried to tone it down. The auto selection is noticeable. I do wish we could tell what the duck is eating.   Posted: 01/05/2025 21:22:24

This helps the photo, but the auto selection still leaves a weird blue bit behind the head. It's hard for Photoshop to find the margins when fur and feathers are involved. I know from many failed attempts.   Posted: 01/07/2025 17:39:47

Agree with previous comments, especially the funny blue item at rear of bird's head. Maybe it's a globule of water? (doubt it).
I'm going to guess the duck is eating a mussel of some sort.....   Posted: 01/14/2025 02:14:11

Good nature story, anymore competition judges seem to like images like this better with the subject in action. I would suggest, try to tone the contrast of the water down a bit, I think this would make the duck stand out better.   Posted: 01/14/2025 15:53:47
