Great Blue Heron on Hope Lake (Ct) by Norm Solomon

September 2021 - Great Blue Heron on Hope Lake (Ct)

About the Image(s)

This Great Blue has been on & around our local lake a few times this summer…but because the bird is very aware of `intruders’ I haven’t been able to get close enough withy my gear to take a photo until recently. But persistence in photography pays…one morning (among the many I trudged to the lake!) I saw the Great Blue before it decided to fly away and I made this image. Why isn’t the bird `bluer’?…my birding friends tell me that as fall approaches some species actually have feathers that turn a different color.

Any comments/suggestions are appreciated.
Nikon Z7ii 70-200z w/2x=400mm in DX mode ISO 2000 f8 1/2000. Processed in NX Studio,PS & Nik Color Effects (to bring out more detailing the feathers)

Hi Norm,
Well done. You succeeded in capturing a magnificent pose. Perfect exposure and sharp details on this beautiful bird. The background is nicely blurred with no distracting details. Perhaps I might darken the background a bit to give the bird more attention.   Posted: 09/09/2021 14:20:39

The heron and the rock are very cool. In my opinion, the background fights with the main subject; a smaller f/stop might have given you a softer background.   Posted: 09/16/2021 11:41:43

I like the sharp plummage of your blue heron and the sharpness of rock in the foreground. To my eyes, the background distracts from the bird's majestic stance.   Posted: 09/22/2021 11:01:11
