Jewelery City Steampunk Contestants by Joe Norcott

December 2021 - Jewelery City Steampunk Contestants

About the Image(s)

The Jewelry City Steampunk Festival was held in my city of Attleboro, MA back in October 2019. This is the first time I went to a steampunk event and everyone was very friendly and encouraged you to take their picture. This is a photo of the costume contestants. I took the photo in color but converted it to B&W in Photoshop. ISO 200, f/5, 1/100 sec
Here is the link to the festival. https://jewelrycitysteampunk.com/

Joe, this is a crazy but very enjoyable shot and I like what you have done with it. This is almost like an old photo you have found of times gone and a record of collective lunacy. I really like the expressions and poses in this group and you have done very well to catch most of them eyes front and with good expressions. I like the vignette which suits the period feel. The only thing I'd take out would be the two lights in each far left and right windows which distract. The class of Steampunkery 2019 were certainly having a good time! Would have loved to have been there to photograph them.   Posted: 12/04/2021 05:25:09

I'm happy you liked the photo. It is one I toyed with in color. Once I put it in B&W with a white vignette it made a big difference.   Posted: 12/04/2021 06:15:59

Love that steampunk! I think the b&w plus light vignette suit it well. I'm curious about the text over the doorway, "Free to All". Care to comment on its significance?   Posted: 12/11/2021 13:35:32

I think the line over the door might be reminding us of the "free public library?"   Posted: 12/11/2021 21:19:42

That is the front door to the Attleboro Library. It's an old building and it just went through a renovation during the pandemic. Haven't been it yet but I hear it's really nice inside. https://attleborolibrary.org/apl-construction-project/   Posted: 12/12/2021 18:45:19

Well handled, Joe. I'm checking off all the boxes on this one - going B&W; the vignette giving us an antique look; Perhaps take out those globes in the two windows.

I attended the Steampunk in Waltham afew years ago and looking forward to Attleboro and Waltham this year.   Posted: 12/11/2021 21:22:34

Glad to see you like the photo. I am looking forward to the Waltham event since they relate it to the old days of the Waltham Watch Manufacturing Company. I once had a Waltham wrist watch as one of my first watches and remember the Waltham Bedroom Alarm Clock as well with the bells. Wait am I that old???   Posted: 12/12/2021 18:47:51

An interesting photo with all the costumes and characters and well-focused. Getting alI these people looking at the camera with open eyes is a feat in itself. I think monochrome is definitely the best choice. For my taste, the white vignette is a bit overdone.   Posted: 12/16/2021 17:59:28

What a motley crew. The way you have treated this helps to give the image a feel of times gone by. The monochrome and the slight light vignette all helps with the effect.   Posted: 12/18/2021 06:56:39

Dear Joe, I also like it to be b/w. It's difficult to get a fine group photo, but this one is great. I enjoyed watching their costumes and expressions. Your description helps me understand more about the Steampunk Festival. - Marisa   Posted: 12/19/2021 06:04:23
