About the Image(s)

In 2019 I took a Sea and Land Tour with Princess Cruises from New York City to Montreal, Canada. Peggy's Cove in Halifax, New Brunswick is a well-known tourist destination. There were a great abundance of wonderful photo opportunities but this was on of my favorites. The colorful display of sun chairs with the lobster trap as a focal point was irresistible and seemed to capture the essence of this beautiful small town.
Technical: 1/3200 sec, f/7.1, ISO400, 45mm.

There's something about this shot that bothers me? I think it might be the large White House in the background which has my eye heading there. Perhaps a lower angle (if you are able to get up off the ground) would have you eliminating the house. Also, the far right chair is cut off. It is colorful!   Posted: 11/03/2021 15:30:32

Joe, I struggled with this image! Those chairs look pretty uncomfortable to me! But that's besides the point. A colourful image but what is the main focus point? Is it the chairs, the house or the chairs and the crab box? I'm not sure. I think this image is need of a very tight crop. I know you wanted to give an impression of the town but you could still do that by cropping out the house and some of the foreground. Or keep the house and crop in from the right to lose part of the chairs on the right. However, maybe this is an image where there are too many issues and maybe it does convey the essence of this town and trying to impose 'rules of photography' on it is pointless. In many cases I think attempting to 'get it right' negates the whole pleasure of photography. I certainly enjoyed seeing this image from a part of the world I will probably never visit, so thank you.   Posted: 11/05/2021 04:40:08

Glenn, Joe and Peter's comments are helpful from a professional view. However, you successfully keep a memory during a tour. The colorful sun chairs with the lobster trap are impressive! - Marisa   Posted: 11/06/2021 15:59:02

I look at it as a shoreline view. Having the chairs and lobster trap adds to it. It wouldn't be a good photo without them. Nice capture of the colors.   Posted: 11/08/2021 15:50:16

I love the colorful chairs and how they recede into the background. Too bad there isn't a lobster in the pot.

Beyond that, my reaction depends on your intent. As a memory of the trip, its fine just as it is. If it was an image I was trying to take for hanging on the wall, or competition, I'd try and simplify the image by focusing on the chairs and lobster pot. Perhaps a higher angle would give more flexibility to crop tightly around the chairs and pot - maybe even eliminating the frame structure at the right.   Posted: 11/09/2021 09:13:42

Peggys Cove is a great place for colourful photographs. These chairs just cry out for our attention.Although the building helps set the scene I think it is too dominant. I would take a crop just above the chairs and get rid of it.Those colours are great.   Posted: 11/13/2021 05:08:33

Thanks for all the great suggestions. This is not a wall-hanger or for competition. Just sharing a colorful moment on the beach at a picturesque venue.   Posted: 11/15/2021 20:33:08
