About the Image(s)

My daughter needed a new head shot, so I bought a couple of cheap soft boxes, researched portrait lighting, and on a visit (she is 750 miles away) took some photos. To my horror, when I got back and looked at the images in Lightroom, there were unsightly hot spots (cheap soft box not so soft) which I couldn't eliminate using a localized adjustment. Fortunately, Google came to the rescue, and I found an article that showed how to "fix" it by importing to Photoshop, selecting a skin color close to the hot spot, and brushing over the hot spots on a separate layer set to about 20% opacity. That, plus some other adjustments, produced this result. Sony A7R3, 1/80 f4 iso1000.

Sheldon, I'm sure your daughter was impressed with this! Pleasing smile and facial expression. The dress color accents the entire image. A minor sticking point for me was the book spines in the background. Perhaps burn them down a bit.   Posted: 11/03/2021 15:38:03

Sheldon, you did a good job with the hot spots and I will remember that technique. Well posed and yet still looking natural. I agree with Joe that the background needs attention even if your daughter wanted to give the impression that she was very studious!   Posted: 11/05/2021 04:27:10

Sheldon, I edited my own portraits sometimes and understand it is not easy to get the best result. You did a superb job! - Marisa   Posted: 11/06/2021 15:33:26

Compared to the original this is a very good post production. I have no problems with the books in the background. The books breakup what would have been a plain background. Nice portrait.   Posted: 11/08/2021 15:52:00

A very pleasing result for your effort. Position in the frame is good and an excellent expression. I have to agree a bit about the books in the background although they do set the scene. Good work on the highlights.   Posted: 11/13/2021 05:00:26

Thanks for explaining the process. The finished portrait is very well done, and she is a beautiful subject. My preference would be to reduce the tonality of the books even more. They do not enhance the subject in my opinion.   Posted: 11/15/2021 20:23:01
