Grand Canyon North Rim by Sheldon Wecker, QPSA

September 2021 - Grand Canyon North Rim

About the Image(s)

This image was taken during a workshop at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, near Walhalla overlook. The North Rim is much less crowded than the South Rim because even though the Canyon is only 10 miles across, you have to drive all around the end of it to get there. I was attracted to the pastel colors and patterns of the canyon walls, and the loop in the river (likely Colorado River). We went out early in the morning and agin in the evening for sunrise and sunset. Restaurant facilities were limited due to Coronavirus, so many breakfasts and dinners consisted of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Capturing the image was a challenge because of the smoke from the fires in California. Significant editing was required in Lightroom, as well as plugins such as Topaz Denoise AI, to draw the image of the canyon out of the haze. Taken with Sony RX100v, 26mm, f8.0, iso 400.

Sheldon, this is a stunning landscape with plenty of colour variation and depth. You have done very well considering the haze. I hesitated about playing with this image as the landscape is so awesome but I did wonder if upping the contrast might bring out the far side a little more and this is the result.   Posted: 09/08/2021 05:04:50

Thanks Peter - I went back and played with contrast, and I do like it better with a little more contrast. Increased texture (Lightroom) but only in the top of the pixture. I wanted to keep some of the mysterious feel. Thanks for the suggestion   Posted: 09/08/2021 12:07:14

Definite wall hanger, Sheldon. I was at the North Rim several years ago and have experienced the trek to get to the landscapes! Those winding roads can be tricky before sunrise!

I liked the layering within the scene! Your colors are exceptional. I feel the foreground gives the viewer some place to set our eyes before leaping into the canton!   Posted: 09/11/2021 10:10:40

Really well done. Lucky you were able to capture the different colors in the landscape. I agree it's a wall hanger!   Posted: 09/12/2021 19:05:00

This is an outstanding photo of an iconic scene. The color layers are captivating in combination with the topological variations. My only suggestion is to try the de-haze slider in Lightroom. It might give you better contrast and improved color.   Posted: 09/16/2021 11:52:55
