June 2021 - Slot Canyon after Hours

About the Image(s)

I had a chance a few years back to be in the slot canyons after dark. The guide was well versed in photography and proved very helpful to several participants. Obviously placed on a tripod with an f/stop of f/3.5 and an ISO of 1250 with a 25 second exposure. The RAW file was run through PS and some NIK filters.

Interesting photo. I keep looking to the left rock area. I wonder if it would of been better to crop off some of it and center the bottom more. You got a lot of clarity of the stars. Were the rocks lit up for the photo? If not great detail.   Posted: 06/10/2021 15:16:00

This is an intriguing image which I like a lot. The effect is dramatic as the shape of the rock face looks like a face in profile - is that how I'm meant to read it? I like the small bush at the base too which gives a sense of scale.   Posted: 06/11/2021 08:22:03

I like the fact that you have included a well lit foreground that sets a location and then we have the magnificent starscape beyond.I like it just the way it is.   Posted: 06/12/2021 07:35:00

So many stars. So few people get to see skies like that any more. I think the toning and composition take away from the night sky somewhat. I agree with Joe about cropping from the left to keep more focus on the sky. I would also decrease the brightness of the rocks, and perhaps darken the sky, but not the stars (decrease blue luminance perhaps).   Posted: 06/14/2021 14:29:49

I love the sky but found the rock formation a bit overpowering so I tried two crops but kept enough of the rocks to create a frame. What do you think?   Posted: 06/14/2021 20:19:04

Many great suggestions for my "Slot Canyon after Hours" shot. I am looking forward to giving them a go.

I like your composition but prefer Bev's crop from the left. Although the texture and geometry of the rocks are dramatic, the brightness does distract from the sky. For me, more sky emphasis and a little bit off the rock lighting would be an improvement. Anyway, it is a great shot.   Posted: 06/17/2021 19:21:55
