About the Image(s)

I went to Potomac Falls outside Washington DC with the intention of taking landscape photographs of the falls. Some kayakers showed up and had fun in the white water below the falls, so I took the opportunity to photograph them.

Canon 5D Mk 4 with 100-400mm lens at 370mm. Manual exposure at 1/800 sec and f 7.1 Handheld, with Auto ISO at 200.
Edited in Lightroom
Cropped to focus on the subject. Lowered the highlights because of the white water. Slight increase in vibrance and saturation.

I look forward to the comments and upgrades. I am learning a lot from all the different comments about all the photographs in the group.

Hi Billy! I think that you have captured the feeling of challenge and adventure very well by freezing the motion of the kayak in the middle of the torrents. I think that the white water and the shades of green look great. I wonder if placing him a little more off-center and leaving a bit more room to move in might make the image even more dynamic?   Posted: 10/13/2021 15:03:08

Hi Kirsti, thank you for your comments. I changed the crop as you suggested and I agree it looks more dynamic.

Billy,
I think it's a great journalism shot even though centered. Your correction of placement makes it even better. The shot shows the kayaker's face so well, deep concentration. Everything is sharp but the water is really riled up making it look dangerous, which I assume it was. The boat being red also helps. I think it's just about perfect for journalism.   Posted: 10/16/2021 13:24:34

Billy: Great photo journalism! I especially like the interpretation you did in answering Kirsti's comments. Now the kayak is in the thirds rule. The color of green, white, and red work all together. I think you nailed it right on. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 10/22/2021 13:27:20

Billy, I've been there and seen those waters. You have captured the powerful churning of same. I like the photo changed as Kirsti suggested because it gives room for the kayaker to move into. Great change of subjects!   Posted: 10/25/2021 15:18:58
