Spider Web with Jewels by Jeri Conklin

October 2021 - Spider Web with Jewels

About the Image(s)

This spider web was taken in Skagway, Alaska on the boat dock. It was taken in heavy fog, hence all the water drops off the web.

Nikon D5300
1/500 Sec; F/5.6; 300 mm; ISO 1100

I'm wondering if it would work better as a square photo, but then I think it loses its intrigue as a web. Thoughts?

Thank you, stay safe!

Hi Jeri, a wonderful image! I think that your crop is perfect - it does give the image a fine tension. I think that square format could easily reduce it just to a pretty mandala? I love the background, too, with the soft blend of colors, that makes the dew drop jewels stand out.   Posted: 10/13/2021 13:37:07

Hi Jeri, what a wonderful way to take advantage of the environmental conditions. Heavy fog is usually very limiting but you saw how it created this opportunity. The web is in sharp focus with specular highlights, while the wide aperture and fog gave us this beautiful soft background with the graduation of color and light. I agree that this crop is much better than a square one. Good job.

You did a great job in photographing the spider's web with dewdrops on it. You were lucky that the background was so obscure, making the web really stand out. As for the shape of the photo, I would keep it as is, much more dynamic. One hopes to find this photo opportunity without having to go all the way to Alaska. Really nice job.   Posted: 10/16/2021 13:37:58
