Tender Moment by Billy Sinclair

September 2021 - Tender Moment

About the Image(s)

here is my submission for Sept 2021, DD15.
Canon 5D Mark 4 with 24 - 105mm lens at 95mm. I used a flash with a diffuser to soften the light. The exposure was set manually at f/8 for 1/125sec. Manual ISO at 800.
I did minimal editing in Lightroom to remove or darken some distracting items in the background.
My wife Jean and I were in Ireland for a family wedding and this young couple also attended the wedding with their six week old son. I thought this was tender moment.
I welcome your comments and upgrades.

Hi Billy! You captured the tender moment so beautifully. The love in the parents expressions touches every viewer, and I think the composition supports the story very well. The little family forms a close triangle, and both the parents look at the baby, directing also the viewers attention there. - I got an idea of an alternative crop that would fill the frame with the most essential: I rotated the frame just a bit clockwise and cropped it almost to square form. I felt that it might concentrate on the moment maybe even more intensively, although you would lose the father's protective arm. What do you think?   Posted: 09/12/2021 15:03:01

Hi Kristi, you are right that the tighter crop increases the concentration on the moment. However, I think the father's protective arm is an important part of the story, so I am leaning towards the original framing.

Great triangle between the three of them. The young couple look so fresh and new, as does the baby, of course. The newly married couple and new parents are totally concentrated on the baby, which is as it should be. Very nice composition which fills the frame perfectly, in my opinion. As to the tighter crop, suggested by Kristi, it is also good. However, I like the arm of the father, maybe just crop a bit on the left side.   Posted: 09/13/2021 12:30:17

Thank you Joan. I will try cropping the left hand side as you suggest.   Posted: 09/13/2021 13:28:35

Billy, such a soft moment. I agree with all the comments above. It is just one of those photos you cherish and for me, the subject is the baby, the parents are ancillary. Thank you for sharing.   Posted: 09/13/2021 14:05:09
