Running in Montana by Ingrid Lockhart

August 2022 - Running in Montana

About the Image(s)

This is another image I captured while we were visiting the Montana Ranch. It was taken with my Sony RX10-4, 50mm, 1/2000 of a second, ISO 100, F3.2. The running of the horses was a bi-weekly event, where the ranch hands let all of their horses run out of the paddocks and into a nearby field for the amusement of the guests. Unfortunately, the field they used for this purpose did not have an interesting background, so I took the liberty of moving the running horses into another nearby field which had a beautiful hill behind it. I had to flip the horse selection to get the light coming from the right direction. Please let me know if you see any issue that lets the viewer know I manipulated the reality. Thanks.

A good image works well the horses coming from the right leading to the left draws the eye into the image together with quite an interesting fence line being in the distance giving that degree of curiosity to the viewer. You have handled the combination of two images well there is no evidence of the combination and as you have stated the light coming from the right direction adds to the authenticity of the scene. Luminosity and colour balance across a scene with these combined images works very well. My only comment would be to crop the sky and the right side of the image, just to put more emphasis on the horses themselves. There is a lot of real estate in this image and would not suffer from a crop. Lovely imaged with the editing and combining images works very well.   Posted: 08/05/2022 21:44:23

Thanks, Tom. I will definitely try your crop suggestion and will probably also reduce the sky a little to keep the aspect ratio.   Posted: 08/14/2022 12:52:35

Hi Ingrid,
I believe you accomplished your goal of creating a realistic looking composite. Your running horses work well with your background. I agree with Tom's recommendation that a little cropping may help emphasis the horses more.

Hi Ingrid - You did a wonderful job of integrating the new background and except for your description, I would not have guessed you had altered reality. While the sky is quite interesting, I too would suggest cropping the image from the top for a panoramic image. If you prefer you could take some from the left as well, but pulling down the sky provides an interesting composition on it's own. The greens seem slightly over-saturated on the back hills on my computer . . . but then again, this IS Montana. The lighting works well as does the diagonal created by following the horses into the image. Such beautiful country - nicely done!   Posted: 08/15/2022 15:25:46
