Holy Rakher Upobash by Syed Shakhawat Kamal, QPSA

November 2021 - Holy Rakher Upobash

About the Image(s)

This image is a photograph of a religious ritual called "Rakher Upobash". It is taken by Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera on this very religious festival that took place in "swami bag'' in Dhaka. It was created on 13 November 2018. This is one of my favorite images that I captured. In this festival the hindu devotees break their fasting for the wellbeing of their loved ones, a hindu saint called "Baba Lokenath" established this religious tradition in that ashram.

I hope you all will enjoy the image.

What a very strong image. You handled the contrast between the light and dark areas well and the scene shot from above gives the viewer a great vantage point to observe festival. Thank you again for sharing part of the world I may never get to see in person. I also like that technology is well represent with the gentleman in the front row with his cell phone. Thanks again for a wonderful image.
Best regards,

Hi Syed a very bright colourful image that captures the eye immediately. I particularly like the transitions from the bright fully saturated areas to the shadows, the contrast. Works well. Taken from directly above the people give a interesting viewpoint. Thanks for sharing   Posted: 11/14/2021 02:19:05

Hi Syed. This is a very intriguing and successful image. The colors and patterns are amazing and your point of view is unique. Your description of what this image represents is fascinating, but I think the image stands on its own as a beautiful almost abstract composition. I can certainly understand why this is one of your favorite images, Syed! Thanks for letting us see it! Ingrid   Posted: 11/15/2021 17:41:04

Hi Kamal - Your preference for capturing images from above make them interesting and often times quite impactful. The bright and beautiful colors and textures draw the viewer's eye making me want to examine the detail and understand what we're seeing all the more. Particularly interesting is how clear the image is given the number of oil lamps/candles and/or incense used by so many - is there a particular trick to that or was the timing just right? How fortunate you were to be able to attend the ashram where this tradition originated. The image is quite effective and well processed.   Posted: 11/15/2021 20:25:34

Hi Darcy,
Thank you for your inspiring comment & liking this image. This is one of my favorite spot to shoot when the celebration starts. Corona outbreak has disturbed every thing. These days very limited movement. I am really fortunate to shoot this amazing ritual and celebration.
Stay safe & stay blessed as always.

Hello Kamal,

I was taken by the colors and symmetry of your image and thought "what a beautiful abstract". Then I read your description and went back for a closer look. Holy Moly - those are people - not "abstracts"!

This is a stunning image made even more special by the difficulty in obtaining such a fabulous overhead shot.

Well done!

Hi Kamal, when I first saw this image, I don't know what this image is about - it was just like a graphic pattern design. After reading your description, I understood what the story the image is about. I think because the lighting is not good, the image is over-processed, too much contrasting, and lost the middle tone. Anyway, I like the content of the image, your image is always so interesting. Thanks for sharing!   Posted: 11/17/2021 10:45:33

Hi Xiao,
Greetings my friend,

This is the original image. I have not made much processing except for cropping and removing some spots and areas to make it look better. I have not touched the lighting or saturation slider at all.

This is a low light condition. I have few 100s shots of this kind. Interestingly the color of the images keep changing for changing of lights color. And I wanted to have all variation of light and color change while shooting this particular frame. Thanks for liking this shot.
Stay safe and cheers.
