Unexpected Landing by Darcy Johnson

November 2021 - Unexpected Landing

About the Image(s)

I live in an area where hot air balloons seem to wander by with some regularity. While there is plenty of open land in the area, there are times when things don't seem to go to plan. This was one such occasion. The crew was quite skilled though and seemed to navigate the challenge of landing on a tight residential street and packed up in short order - no harm done to either housing or balloon.

This image was taken in early morning at the beginning of summer. Hand-held with a Nikon D500. I cropped a small amount off the top and did some basic adjustments in Lightroom CC. ISO 50, 400mm, 1/100 sec at f6.3

Hi Darcy,
What a nice interesting image that tell a great story. My eyes are drawn to the colors in the balloon, so I would suggest that you darken the sky a bit and kick up the saturation to bring out colors in the balloon. Thanks for sharing this interesting image.
Best regards,

Hi Darcey
Wow-what an unusual event to happen in your neighbourhood, I'm sure your local press would have been very interested in this image at the time. Well captured and your point of view depicts the scale of the balloon with the cluster of the housing showing a true story of the crowded environment the pilot had available to land the balloon. The image itself is presented well however I think that you could gain a more dramatic effect by perhaps reducing the sky and the rooftops to a minor degree and then increasing the brightness and vibrance of the balloon itself, again just to a minor degree very subtle changes would in my view improve the impact on the first time somebody views of. Great image good photojournalist type photograph and well-presented thanks for sharing

Thanks Tom - Just a lucky opportunity with my camera at hand. I keep working on trying to create a more dramatic feel in post. I'm a bit conservative in wanting to not overdo. It always helps to have another go in post after we talk though. Best ~   Posted: 11/15/2021 20:41:24

Hi Darcy,
Greetings my friend.
What an exciting story with a photojournalistic image you have shared with us. The color, the lights & the shot of opportunity all worked very well. The sharpness and the composition given the circumstances is also very professional. I loved the way you have handled the composition. But may be, you could reduce the part of the sky above and allow the houses to be more prominent in the composition which probably give a complete picture or almost complete picture with the realistic perception. But over all very nicely done. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers.

Hi Darcy. Amazing! - what a sight to have in your neighborhood! Your composition does an excellent job of telling the story of having landed in a very tight space. The juxtaposition of the roofs with the colorful balloon is dramatic and interesting. I agree that increasing the color intensity of the balloon would be beneficial, but I think this is a very successful and interesting image just the way it is. Thanks for sharing. Hello Darcy,

My first reaction was "WHOA! What a capture!" And, isn't that what we want to achieve with out photos? This one certainly has impact!

I concur with the prior suggestions - maybe just crop a bit of sky at the top and saturate the colors in the balloon just a bit more.

Great capture!

Thanks Karen - Seems appears unanimous. I'll see what I can do with the colors. I little bit more of a crop off the top should help as well. I appreciate the input!   Posted: 11/15/2021 20:50:15

Hi Darcy, when I saw this image I thought it is about the balloon flying in the sky, but after reading your description, I knew I was wrong, and it is about the location - "Unexpected Landing". So it would be better to show more location space than the balloon, more like a photojournalistic style image. It is just my opinion. Thanks for sharing.   Posted: 11/17/2021 10:18:08
