Bay Bridge, San Francisco by Ingrid Lockhart

September 2021 - Bay Bridge, San Francisco

About the Image(s)

I took this image from a moving car (passenger of course) because I appreciated the shapes and the light as it hit the bridge supports. I chose the black and white format to emphasize those features. My goal was to capture the beauty in the utilitarian design of the newer part of the bridge as it spans the Bay, hopefully now able to withstand earthquake activity. It was taken with a Sony RX10, 55mm focal length, 1/1000, F11, ISO250.

Hi Ingrid,
What a strong composition. I agree that your conversion to B&W helps bring out the shapes and form.
Best regards,

Hi Ingrid
A very strong bold image well handled in black-and-white with the various luminosity levels been appropriate for this image. There is enough detail in the bold main structure which could easily have been lost to total blackness, well handled. The sharpness of the structural elements also adds to the overall strength of the image and you are applauded to be to have taken this from a moving car. As a compositional comment, it's a shame that the two main suspension elements do not come into the image at the same point in the frame, perhaps next time stopping the car in the middle of the road and causing a major traffic accident would be the go (okay perhaps not) well captured from a moving car lovely image very strong. Thanks for such positive comments, Tom. I suggested a stop for a better shot to my husband, but he declined, imagine that!?!   Posted: 09/15/2021 14:34:44

Hi Ingrid - This is a beautifully simple and well executed black & white composition. For my part, I think it works that the suspension elements are not symmetrical as it may make the image less interesting. It's sharp with really nice contrast. If anything I might suggest trying to bring out just a bit more of the detail in the main structure. Otherwise, well-done!   Posted: 09/10/2021 15:45:49

Thanks for your positive comments. I tried bringing out a little more detail in the main structure, but I'm not sure it's an improvement. What do you think?   Posted: 09/15/2021 15:02:43

Hi Ingrid - You certainly were able to bring out more detail . . . now things have gone a bit too much the other way. Having to pick, your first presentation was better. Thanks for giving it a try.   Posted: 09/16/2021 16:51:59
