Chinatown Lanterns by Darcy Johnson

May 2021 - Chinatown Lanterns

About the Image(s)

You know you're in Chinatown when you see the famous red lanterns. This image was taken in one of my favorite towns to visit - San Francisco. The photo was captured during a break in the rain on a very overcast day. Wished I had gotten a chance to see them lit up at night . . . something to plan for next time.

In post, I sharpened, dehazed, added a vignette, played with the shadows some as well as the saturation and hues. ISO640, 238mm, f5.6, 1/320 sec.

hi Darcey, loverly image and the red lanterns definitely draw the eye, the reduced saturation of the background pivots the eye to the main subject, strengthening the main subject. One minor suggestion the yellow tassels seem to get lost, perhaps a selective colour adjustment in the colour mixer tab in Lightroom may bring them out a bit more, you will need to keep an eye on the background as there will be similar tones in the background as well.   Posted: 05/04/2021 19:37:08

Hi Darcy,
What a nice image. I think the overcast day helped bring the colors out. I agree with the recommendations that Tom made. One addition point. I think if you would have moved 1 step to the right you would have gotten good separation of the main lanterns. All in all a very nice image.
Best regards,

Thanks Greg - Good point about lantern separation. That may have put me in danger of being run over as I recall . . . a good point nonetheless.   Posted: 05/05/2021 12:10:58

Very nice holiday image! You captured it very well. I prefer the background to have more blur feels, and I think it would be better to use f stop < f4 to do this kind of shootings. Another thing, I don't like the wires on the top of lanterns, looks not good to me.   Posted: 05/05/2021 14:13:26

Hi Xiao - I tried cropping to eliminate the horizontal wires, but I didn't like the look. I agree that there is a bit more distraction from the background than at a lower f stop, but I want to see enough of the background to get the Chinatown feel beyond the lanterns. I'll try it both ways in the future and compare. I appreciate your feedback.   Posted: 05/05/2021 14:46:10
