Railings by Steven Wharram, LRPS

January 2022 - Railings

About the Image(s)

This was taken earlier last year on a walkabout. I spotted these railings as I was walking over a bridge but the sun was high and there wasn't much of a shadow. However, when I came back a few later the shadows had grown and I liked the shapes that they formed with the boarding of the bridge.

What I did:
As usual, I've kept any manipulation to a minimum
Cropped slightly

I love this photo. Great capture of lines and curves and just the right amount of abstraction. The only suggestion I would make, and I don't really know if it would help, is to slightly crop the top and bottom so that both the reflection and the walkway(?) would have no beginning or end. I'm glad you didn't turn it into a B&W image because the reddish brown color of the walkway helps separate it from the shadows.   Posted: 01/09/2022 11:45:55

Thanks Paul. I have presented this image before with a crop similar to the one you suggested. I'm not sure why I didn't use that one here.   Posted: 01/15/2022 07:54:37

I love the way that you see things on your walks and use them to make creative images. The color does separate the shadows from the walkway, I agree with Paul about leaving it as a color image.   Posted: 01/09/2022 12:29:16

Thanks Barbara. I think the seeing comes from taking a photo a day as it forces me to keep looking at everyday items in different ways. I may walk past the same object 3 or 4 times then, all of a sudden, I see an mage in it.   Posted: 01/15/2022 07:56:17

Very interesting and without the title would make you wonder what was captured in a slight curve.   Posted: 01/09/2022 15:11:00

Thanks Tim. I like titles. Others don't. I think the right title helps an image a lot. To be fair though, this was merely a description. :)   Posted: 01/15/2022 07:57:23

Great abstract image. Sharp detail. Color adds to the over all effect. Monochrome may work as well?   Posted: 01/10/2022 22:00:38

Thanks Russell. I have tried it in B&W but find that, in this case, I prefer the slight red hue.   Posted: 01/15/2022 07:58:29
