Joy - Cookie Time by Ally Green

June 2022 - Joy - Cookie Time

About the Image(s)

At Beaver Creek in Colorado they give out free Cookies at 3.00pm in the winter which is always greeted with ‘Joy’…people love it! There is always a scramble for these cookies and in the busy times they produce 2000 which are gone in a flash!

I was photographing the ‘Cookie’ time and came across these kids enjoying the moment. Little done in post apart from moving the sliders in LR. 1/640 F5.6 ISO200 shot with 24-70mm.

I love the "Joy" that these kids portray. Each one's expression is wonderful...joyful,happy, with a bit of smart alec that this age does so well. But my eye kept leaving them and going up. I thought that the colorful line of people behind the kids detracted from the subjects. So I tried creating a Duplicate Layer, which I blurred slightly. I created a Layer Mask and painted in the subjects, leaving only the people behind blurred. I used a vignette to further bring my eye to the Center. Now when I look at it, I focus more on those happy faces. A minor change. Not sure if you agree.   Posted: 06/05/2022 16:11:33

Welcome Fran to our Group, nice to have you with us! Thank you for you constructive comments and do agree that the background is a bit distracting. Wish i could have opened up the aperture to create more of a blur but it was a grab shot so was focusing on the kids! I like what you have done though so thank you.   Posted: 06/06/2022 11:27:26

This is a great picture - lots of color and wonderful expressions on the kids faces. Definitely joyful! It made me smile too.   Posted: 06/09/2022 16:19:20

You captured the children's joy very well. All the bright colors contribute to that happy feeling, too. My method of de-emphasizing such a light background would be to use selective post-editing and darken the highlights and maybe slightly less exposure. I often do this to make a main subject stand out. I think some people call it light painting in post editing. I see the great reaction that you, the photographer, got when taking this photo. The children responded well.   Posted: 06/11/2022 12:15:38

I love it when the kids mug for the camera. Their delight is contagious. I do agree with Fran and like her version. This one is great fun!   Posted: 06/11/2022 13:46:55

You can really feel the joy in their faces. I notice they have helmets. Do kids use that now to ski ? Its been so long since I've done that. I like what Fran did, but I would have been ok without it. It sort of fills in what they've been doing with a line behind them. I also felt the colors with snow around them made for great photo.   Posted: 06/18/2022 17:40:35
