About the Image(s)

The road to Steamboat from Edwards, Colorado is one of my favorite rides (in a car or on my motorcycle!) and this particular stretch is wonderful. The small 'one horse town' is called Toponas and just has a few houses and ranches and a gas station…it really is like something out of the Wild West! I converted this image to Black & White as think it looks better in my opinion, in Silver Efex Pro and cropped out the vertical posts. Shot with my Canon 5D Mark IV, 24-70mm lens. 1/250 F14, ISO 400.

Silver Effects is my go-to for converting to B&W. There are lots of pre-sets, all of them customizable. The crop is good, as it keeps the road from mergin exactly with the corners of the picture. Very well done.   Posted: 07/11/2021 10:26:23

Changing from color to black and white is surely effective with your image. Your example reminds us to think about it more often for our own images. I remember when I first heard about Silver FX. I bought it and loved it because I no longer had to use colored filters when taking the photo on BW film. Now I use the controls that mimic those colored filters (in Photoshop or Lightroom) to make my changes. I wonder if you stopped your vehicle in the middle of the road to take this photo???   Posted: 07/18/2021 14:50:17

Thanks Carole..yes i am a fan too of Silver FX. Actually i parked my car on the side of the road then walked to the middle of the road to get the shot i wanted. Luckily it is quite a remote stretch so not too much traffic!   Posted: 07/18/2021 15:41:24

I like the B&W photo much better too. I've been finding more and more free B&W presets for Lightroom lately and been trying them out. It's high and miss. I still Silver Efex pro is much easier to use and always fall back on it.   Posted: 07/19/2021 19:04:11

Ally, I like this image alot. The are many tones of gray and the light is well balanced. I like both images - each one gives you a different feeling. I, too, use Silver FX.   Posted: 07/20/2021 10:44:14

When I first saw this photo I assumed it was someplace exotic like Iceland or Greenland. Love that this is Colorado. I truly believe the effectiveness of this photo owes itself to the B&W conversion and love an open highway photo where possibilities always seem endless. Great use of the option.   Posted: 07/20/2021 21:57:40

Walter, for those of us who live in the east, Colorado is pretty exotic.   Posted: 07/21/2021 15:53:42

I will have to agree. Anything outside of Arizona or Southern California seems rather extraordinary lately.   Posted: 07/21/2021 22:49:42
