About the Image(s)

I took this picture recently in the town of Bremerhaven, a big container port in Europe - Germany. I was not sure, if this take would be good in “black and white“, so I decided to make the take in color and convert it afterwards. Camera Canon R5, Sigma 24-70/2.8/Art, 70mm, Ap. 8, 1/320 sec; ISO 200.

Peter, I like your image and the way the diagonals flow. I especially like that you cloned out the bright spots in the original and the dark verticals in the top left corner. A minor suggestion is to slightly brighten the image. In my revision I did so and I also sharpened using a Topaz sharpen filter.   Posted: 05/06/2023 06:38:47

Hello Jim, very good suggestion. What I do not understand is the Topaz filter - I did it twice and sharpened it as good I could ... how did you managed a better result? :)   Posted: 05/06/2023 09:22:13

Peter, I think the reason for the increased sharpness in my revision comes from the use the somewhat new Topaz A1 DeNoise filter. About a year ago I bought two new Topaz filters - Topaz DeNoise A1 and Topaz Sharpen A1. I usually use only the Topaz Denoise filter which has 4 options - standard, clear, low light and severe. For each of these options there is a slider where you can adjust the amount of noise removal and another slider to adjust the amount of enhancing sharpness. The filter offers a split view where you can view half of the image without the filter and the other half with the filter applied. And, you can also view all 4 applications at the same time. I probably just used the standard option in making my revised image. I think Topaz offers a 30 day trial. I very seldom use the Topaz Sharpen A1 but do find it useful in eliminating motion blur. Please let me know if my explanation is helpful.   Posted: 05/06/2023 19:25:08

Jim, so do I. I have all 4 options with special, high placed options of blurry and noise and I decide from case to case. More seldom I use Topaz Sharpen AI. I the last 6 months I am using high ISO-rates with the advantage of shorter time. Useful for sports and nature, especially birds and insects. I am supprised how you mange it to get sharper pix than me! Respect. In deed, I would choose your sharper version, but a little bit darker if this would be an option! Probably I have to learn more about the software. Is it possible for you to send me a screen shot of the settings of your chosen version? You can send it via email? Would be great! Peter, I don't remember what I did when I first modified your image. So, I went back to your original image and did the following, First, selected Topaz A1 noise, Standard mode, remove noise at 65, enhance sharpness at 59, post processing recover detail 6 and color noise reduce at 38. After redoing your image using just A1 noise filter, I did not notice any difference in sharpness from your processed image. So, I must have then gone to Topaz A1 sharpness (which I just did) and selected lens blur, remove blur at 90, suppress noise at 42 and remove artifacts at 81. After the A1 Sharpness adjustments my second revised image is much sharper than your revised image - see 5/12/23 image. I hope this is not too confusing.   Posted: 05/12/2023 06:16:31

I love images like this. Wonderful abstract and I like your processing a lot. I think I prefer your darker version but it could go both ways.   Posted: 05/06/2023 14:15:01

Peter. excellent abstract! You have quite the eye in finding them. Jim's version is sharper and more attractive.

The Topaz De Noise AI and Sharpen AI products are outstanding and now have been replaced with a single Photo AI product. I still like the two individual products, but the results are similar and the Photo AI also allows upscaling the image.

I have been using Topaz Photo AI on certain images and I love the results. This is the only software program I have used from this company.   Posted: 05/11/2023 08:38:14
